From Your Hands to Healing: Artisan Making Workshop Series

Bedford-Stuyvesant - Spring 2023
Wednesdays 4–7 PM | Fridays 4–7 PM | Saturdays 11 AM–1 PM

From Your Hands to Healing: Artisan Making Workshop Series focuses on the fundamentals of art and design, the making process, and its connection to mental, spiritual, and physical healing. Students will be introduced to design principles and construction techniques to produce their own fashion prototypes (wallets, handbags, slippers, and sandals). Along with the technical development of their prototypes, students will utilize mantras, breathing techniques, and simple circulation movements to connect with the making processes. The patience we utilize within the curriculum will instill a “slow and steady” process to fashion design that is essential to sustainable fashion.

"My collection is In Your Face! I was drawn towards how dynamic stars look; the outline we see of them is never an accurate depiction of their true mass. I also really wanted to have an accessible pocket detail for when on the run!"

Ivelisse M.

"I love alternative fashion, specifically anything that's a mix between cutesy and a
bit spooky. I mainly take inspiration from movies, anime, video games, and music that are dear to me and come together to form my own vision. Some of the inspiration also comes from my experiences growing up. The motifs of hearts and eyes are representations of mysteriousness mixed in with comfort."

Celina R.

"Three words that describe my collection are eclectic, culture shock , spiritual. The inspiration for my collection came from introspection. Analyzing my journey, understanding my power and bringing my reality to life. Some of the details of my pieces are monochromatic fabric, various paintings and rough stitching."

Angel K.

"I am inspired by what I would have wanted as a kid/teen/now adult. I thought of what I  would like to have and what I would need in a bag/wallet: lots of pockets, easy lining to empty out my crumbs (can't EVER be without my snacks), and sturdy enough to hold everything like a heavy water bottle (I'm a hydration Qu33n )"

Morgan B.

Inspired by the taste of the women in my life who have passed on and their own sense of style. Their impact influenced my self-expression and is furthered with my being
as an interdisciplinary artist who delights in collages, genuine leather, and the movie, Monstes Inc. Those women were limitless but possessed a suave that allowed for a love of the finer things, I like the finer things . And so aptly titled this collection is sistergrrrrl."

Brittany B.

"Three words that describe my collection are Loveable, abstract, grounding. The main materials for my collection are neutral colors, different shades of brown with a dash of animal prints/materials"

Secoya D.

"One particular detail included within my collection is creating pockets with specialized use for the wearer. One of the handbags, Rudy & Kim, I decided to use a color blocking design that offering two different styling personalities in one. The last special detail i created with my collection is a matching wallet to pair with each bag."

Hunter M.

"The special details of my collection are: double snaps on top of my tote bags to ensure safety and reliability as well as a snap to secure wallets closed;  embossing of my brand/name “hunter moon” hidden  in every piece; and pockets with snaps to shut."

Kayla L.

"My pieces are inspired from my everyday life. I tend to go for neutral accessories so that they can go with every outfit. My preferences when I buy or the details that catch my eye as I  admire other accessories in general are reflected in my work."

Rabiha H.

"The inspiration behind this collection originated from what has always come natural to my spirit and daily life. A love of the beautiful ‘mundane’ colors of nature, and the life around me. Water and trees bring such a strikingly calm beauty within their purpose to supply our worlds consistently, and this collection brings a taste of that normal, yet purposeful, practical, and beautiful way of the world.”
